I can reproduce it on FreeBSD 5.3/amd64. My ports tree is up-to-date.

This is not a Java problem. It is/was a problem with the Linux emulation
layer. That problem has been fixed in FreeBSD 6.x. Since there are no
more releases to come for FreeBSD 5.x, the only real solution here is to
upgrade to FreeBSD 6.x (e.g. 6.1).
