I'm started programming in J2EE for several months ago now.
I'm using Eclipse (eclipse.org) as IDE.
There's a plugin available for free that helps you starting a J2EE
project. You can find the plugin at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/lomboz. You can deploy your project to
several aplication servers including JBOSS/Tomcat.
That's the way I started after a bit of reading.

- J2EE File Event PatternI have a design issue that I was hoping that this list could assist me
with:
I need to create a File Event Handler that is J2EE compliant.
The basic requirements are:
- Detect the arrival of a file on a particular path (including
file masking patterns)
- Recognize the type of file
- Route either data stream or file reference to an appropriate
handler. The handler will process the contents of the file.
- Election of an instance to handle the file (the file will
arrive on a shared drive that all instances of the app will see) to
prevent multiple instances of the same file being processed
Anyone have any good pointers or patterns to use?

- Need help calling java classesHi. I am a beginner in java so i may sound like a total prat here,
but here goes:
I have been given my university coursework to do. I have to make a
program whereby a customer ordering boxes is asked what attributes of
a box he/she wants from list we have been given, then work out a price
for the box. Anyhow, we have six box types, so a class for each, an
Input class for reading input from the keyboard and a main class.
now, obviously the program starts in main, but i need to go to the
Input class as soon as the program starts, so i can put in some info
from the keyboard, but my tutor says that we have to separate the main
and input classes(whereas i can see it being easier to shove it all in
the main class), so i need to know this: How do you call one class
from another in java? I know how to call methods in one class:
methodname();, but i need to access the input class from the main
class. Is this possible or am i barking up the wrong tree? Help is
much appreciated.

- XML Document. Node vs Elements, and moreI am parsing a document, so am using nodelist to get the children of
the root, and using logic to parse the Nodes depending on which one it
is. however, I need more power than "Node" can give me. So can I
somehow convert a Node to an Element (I basically need the ability to
read the attributes of an item as well as just get the value).
However, they don't have an ID that i could accurately read to use the
getElementByID() tag. So how can i convert a node to an element? Or
is there a better way for me to go about this instead of root ->
Nodelist ??

- Open Document Format / Rich Text Format Editor in Javahi all,
I'm looking for a java class or a set of java classes with which I can
display ( and edit ) a ODF-Document (or a RTF-Document).
One requirement is that it is possible to display different fonts,
text size, text color, text-decoration, images, tables with or without
borders/colors , links, background color, indent, numbering, bullets
etc.
I know about the RTFEditorKit and the HTMLEditorKit from the swing
packages ...and of their limitations.
As my application will use SWT (&RCP), I'm looking for a "better"
alternative. Does anyone of you know which classes could be of
interest for me?

- Problem with Javadoc out of memory in WSAD 5.1.2Good morning,
we are using WSAD version 5.1.2 , now we need to create the javadoc of
our project but during he creation we have the following error :
javadoc: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Please increase memory.
For example, on the Sun Classic or HotSpot VMs, add the option -J-Xmx
such as -J-Xmx32m.
if I insert this line
C:\Programmi\Java\jre1.4\bin\javadoc.exe -J-Xmx32m
in the Preference --> Java --> Javadoc Menu we have the message
"javadoc command not exist"
how we could solve the problem using WSAD ??

I have an interface class that I want to use simply as a static data
repository.
e.g.:

While my code can access this just fine, such as MyStatics.STATUS.WARNING
attempts at referencing the internal interface like this:

build.

- How to determine subclasses of a classHello,
I have a situation where all classes that implement a certain
interface are candidates to have a specific annotation. Now I want to
obtain all classes that implement that interface and select those that
have the anotation of interest. Question is how this can be done.
There seems to be no way you can ask a class for its subclasses (as
f.e. in Smalltalk), which would make things realy easy. Any ideas how
this can be solved? Do I have to write my own class loader? Hopefully
not ...

- Building an Exception LayerI am trying to build an Exception Layer for a new system. The exceptions I
want to catch are :
* system/configuration failures e.g., Hibernate configuration file missing
etc. (StructureException)
* system access voilation e.g. wrong user id etc. (PermissionException)
* business rules voilation (BusinessRulesException)
* data access voilation (DAOException)
My question is should these above Exception sub-classes be inherited from
Exception or RuntimeException? Please explain why?
In this system I am planning to use Hibernate and Struts. StructureException
will be used in Hibernate and Struts initialization. I was thinking about
creating 2 classes HibernateStructureException and StrutsStructureException
inherited from StructureException and using them in respective code. What do
you guys think?

- Program counterI'm a newbie at programming and I'm trying to write a program that
allows me to count the number of times a program is accessed with the
result to increment a log file. I can get it to work(ish) with vbs if
the user opens up the program first and then opens the file, but as
you can imagine most users open up the file by double clicking in
explorer or via shortcuts. Has anyone got any advice or can point me in
the right direction

Please, that's the umpteenth wiki page with requested packages. For instance
there is
http://wiki.debian.org/Java/RequestedPackages
which is longer and has my fancy links to bts-usertags-status-pages :-)
Perhaps a more productive way to keep track of requested packages would be
to usertag the ITP/RFPs, so that an up-to-date list can be retrieved from
the BTS. (Alternatively a script could dynamically generate a web page
somewhere.)

We didn't see this page(yes, we might be blind, as it's linked on the
very top of the main Java page, as I see now), and up-to-dateness of
most of the java pages was quite unclear.
So Tom came up with the idea to start a new page, and add a date in it's
name, so it's clear it has to be reviewed and rewritten and then renamed
next year.
(o.k., now when i write this I am not sure if this is the best way to
reach better up-to-date wiki pages, but that's what we thought was good.
The page above is defintely better for the application list. I'll move
the entries to this list.

I see one entry(maven2) having and additional status link apart of the
link to the RFP/ITP bug page(s), and there is no information behind it.

Would be good if we could add some kind of "java-package" tag, so
instead of listing things manually in the wiki, and adding links to the
BTS, we just link to the one page in the BTS that show all stuff tagged
java (and ITP/RFP/already packaged stuff in a sortable fashion).
Then we have one datastore for every information related to the
packaging of these apps.
The wiki would only be used to document general stuff needed to do for
packaging these apps.

P.S.: Apart of that, there are many things that could need a cleaning in
the Java area of the wiki, for example what does it mean to Java/Sun and
Java/SunJava... I'll try to merge such things wehnever I have some
minutes left.

I need an expert's advice and clear some concepts.
I have a NIO server and a NIO client.
I have a big muddle with all this of TCP UDP and NIO.
My NIO server uses ByteBuffers to send objects converted to bytes.
So it's quite eficient. What it must do is to send chat and java
objects that encapsulate some data.
I am doing a kind of game and I need to send data of position and
orientation of some characters that move in a 3d scenario. I don't
need all positions, I will send some, not all. When people receive
them in their clients, I use dead reckoning to move the people
characters.
But if there's many people in the 3d place moving, I will need to send
a huge amount of data. That's why I used NIO.
I read that was done with UDP Datagrams in the past.
My questions are:
- Do I need UDP Datagrams if I use NIO (sending Objects as bytes)?
- Can UDP used with NIO? Or it needs another connection?
- What has to do TCP and UDP with NIO ?
Sorry for the stupid questions. Just asking to clarify and get advice.

- Text not displayed in applet under Windows XPHi all,
I'm working on an application/applet that runs fine as an application
or applet in Linux and as an application in Windows (XP), but when run
as an applet (under firefox or IE) it will SOMETIMES (not always) fail
to display text and images. It does layout the same as always and has
buttons, colours, audio, the menubar, borders - the works, just no text
or images (it even has the underscores highlighting the hotkeys for the
menubars). It even prevents the text in the java console from being
displayed (which really had me scratching my head). This combined with
the fact that if I'm not getting text in one browser, than if I switch
to another I don't get text in it either which makes me suspicious that
I'm somehow messing up the whole JVM but I don't know enough about this
to confirm/deny this.
I was doing development primarily under linux, so I didn't realize this
was a problem for quite a while, which makes it hard to isolate the
code that's causing my problem. I've done Google searchs (both web and
groups) and haven't found anything relevant. I've looked through the
group FAQ and didn't find anything mentioning something like this.
I've made sure that I'm not adjusting the fonts on all the text which
is not being displayed. I've upgraded the jre from 1.4.2_5 to 1.4.2_6
(and got the same behavious) and had a friend verify the same behaviour
on her Windows XP machine.
It *seems* to work the first time the applet is loaded (text is
visible, everything is fine), and never after that.
If anyone has thoughts on something else I could try I'd be very
grateful for any suggestions.

Once I stopped watching television and listening to the radio at. the end of
1990, "they" had to find other ways of committing abuses. So they. took what
must be for them a tried and tested route; they. get at you by subversion of
those around. you. Since they wouldn't be able to do that with my family or
friends, that. meant getting at people in the workplace to be their
mouthpieces and do their dirty. work for them.
They supplied my employers in. Oxford with details from what was going on in
my private life, and what I and other people had said at my home. and
accommodation in Oxford.. So people at work repeated verbatim words which
had been said in my home, and repeated what I'd been. doing recently. Often
the most trivial things, the. ones from your domestic life, are the ones
which hurt most. One manager in particular at Oxford continuously. abused me
for ten months with verbal. sexual abuse, swearing, and threats to terminate
my employment. After ten months I was forced to seek psychiatric help. and
start taking medication, and was. away from work for two months. I spoke
later with a solicitor about what had happened at that. company; he advised
it was only possible to take action if you had left the company as a. result
of harassment, and such an action would have to be started. very soon after
leaving.
Over a. year later the same manager picked on another new worker, with even
more serious results; that. employee tried to commit suicide with an
overdose as a result of the ill-treatment, and was forced. to leave his job.
But he didn't take. action against the company, either. Abuse at work is
comparable to that elsewhere in that tangible evidence is. difficult to
produce, and the abusers will always have their denials ready. when
challenged. And even. if a court accepts what you say happened, it still
remains to prove that abuse causes the type of breakdown. I had at the end
of 1992. In a recent case before a British court, a former member. of the
Army brought a case against others. who had maltreated him ten years
previously.. Although the court accepted that abuse had occurred, it did not
agree that depressive illness. necessarily followed, and denied justice to
the. plaintiff.

I am developing file transfer application, the host is in c++ and the
client is in java. In c++ I am using win32_find_data to get all the
files list and i am sending it to the client through the stream.
The client will reads all the specified information, but i am getting
some blocks in the middle, I hope the problem will be at the reading
side. The host will sends the data in form of win32_find_data format,
and here i am reading the information, so i want how to process the
fileName which is the field of the structure win32_find_data, at the
client side (java side), should i use the charsetdecoder to convert the
type TCHAR(fileName) data to string at java???

- JTable - DefaultTableModelHello,
I have a JTable with a DefaultTableModel. I have a search Methode which
searches in the database and displays the results in the JTable. Now I
want to extract the search from the class and put it in an extra class.
I have for both the JTable and the DefaultTableModel defined getters
and setters and now I want to write the following code in the
outsourced method:
Search.getTable().setVisible(true);
search.getModel().addRow(new Object[]{name,text});
Search is the class where the JTable and the DefaultTableModel is
defined. Both lines are in a loop of a Vector size and the data of the
vector are in the name and text parameters of the addRow Method. The
problem is that this does not work and the rows are not displayed when
I start my Java Application. When I put this code (without the Search
prefix and the get-Method) it works without problems.
Is it not possible to address the table and the model in that way from
another class?

I have installed JDK, but I am unable to use IDE's like Forte v 2.0 and Java
Workshop v 3.0
with this JDK. The problem with both is *jvm.dll*. Both software searches
for this file in my
*/bin/classic/jvm.dll* while I have no such directory structure in my jdk.
Instead jvm.dll is present
in */bin/client/jvm.dll* or */bin/server/jvm.dll*.

- jpg background on JPanel is rendered on top of scrollbars...I have a rudimentary gui with a class that extends JPanel, which sets its
content to a jpg image using:
if (im != null) { g.drawImage(im,0,0,null); }
in the paint() method. However, when I create a JScrollPane that uses this
JPanel extension as its scrollable client, and call a validate, the
scrollbars get visuall overwritten with the jpg image.
Has anyone encountered this error before and knows how to fix it?

Is there any standard for calling Websphere (lets say 6) EJB methods (that
require authentication) from JBoss 4 (I don't know, maybe some kind of
library?).
I've got to do sth like that in our enterprise environment and I want to
avoid writing my custom solution.

- Tomcat javac and warI have a new context that I added by war. I get the error Unable to find a
javac compiler;
com.sun.tools.javac.Main is not on the classpath.
Perhaps JAVA_HOME does not point to the JDK
But all the examples work fine. Why would that be?

- How to pass an Array Attention Eric SosmanOne problem that I see is with the following.
for(int i = 0; i<len; i++)
{ a[i] = rand.nextInt(); // fill array with random num
System.out.println("a[" + i + "] = " + a[i]);}
return a;
}
The elements of an int array are initialized to 0. Because you have the
System.out.println and return statement within the body of the for
loop, the 1st element of the array will be set to a random int, and
then the array will be returned. When a return statement is executed,
the method exits at that point and nothing else in the method is
executed.
