- J2ME Compile ErrorAnyone know what this means:
** Error installing suite (39): The JAD matches a version of a suite
already installed.
I had compiled a MIDlet "normally" with no problem, but then when I
read that I needed to run/install it as "over the air", I switched to
that option in Eclipse and got the above error. If I switch back to
"Midlet" when running, it works fine.
Thanks

- Autoresize Height of JTable's rowsHi,
I have created a JTable that can hold JTrees into it... I had some
difficulties but now, it works well.
But when my JTree gets bigger, I cannot see all of it because it gets
bigger than the height of the row... lol
How can I auto-resize the height of the rows of my JTable to the size
of its content ?
Thank you very much for your answer...

- Thread synchronization problemHello,
I have a class that store informations and has an "empty" attribute.
Whenever I want to access this information, I first check if the class
is "empty". If so, I download the information and set the class non
empty. So I have this method:
private synchronized void assertNotEmpty()
{
if(isEmpty())
{
download();
//now isEmpty() is false
}
}
The problem is that I now require download to be multi-threaded, and
to access some of the methods of the class (it even access the
assertNotEmpty method since it is reading some informations from the
object after having started the download). This obviously result in a
deadlock.
The simple solution is to remove the synchronized, but then I may (and
this happens because "download" is rather long) download several time
the informations (and I dont want that).
How to solve this kind of problem?
Thank you

- Using Java Web Start
I'm developing an internet application in which the client runs as a java
applet. My reasons for making the client an applet are so that no program
installation is required (just the sun java plug-in has to be installed) and
so that the user always runs the latest version of the application.
I received a suggestion (from Andrew) that I consider converting my client
to a JWS (Java Web Start) application. Before I head down that path I was
wondering if anyone who has had experience with JWS could advise me on
whether they think that would be a smart move -- what are the advantages and
disadvantages of working with JWS?
Thanks,

java-programmer, Sony Ericsonn k750i: software/notepad to record list of times
Hi.
I take medication[1] every 4 hours.
They are amphetamines and it's important I take them approx every 4
hours
I need to make a note of what time I take it
Is there a really quick and easy way of doing this? [2]
If someone who knows how to write software can do this I'll pay them
for doing so? [3]
[1] medication is dexedrine for ADHD
[2] would be great if I didn't have to type in the time - if I could do
it quickly - .e.g on the bus.. just press a key and the phone
automatically enters a 'time' stamp.
[3] I'm a student, I can't really afford to pay more than $20 but there
may be a big market it. Ofcourse if you make it freeware, I'd be
delighted!

Write a script for your system, whatever it may be. For windoze
you can use a batch (.bat) file, especially if you have 4dos (a
free download from jpsoft.com). On linux a bash script will do
nicely.
All they have to do is add a line to a file, specifying date and
time. You can arrange various ways of running it.
Alternatively someone can write a whole program, which is gross
overkill.

Oh. There's probably a computer hidden under that, but I am
certainly not familiar with it. Good luck. Try
comp.arch.embedded, where you may well find some of the designers.
Don't cross post all over again, it will get you ignored.

A stopwatch. Reset it to zero when you take the stuff. Lots of digital
watches have such a feature built-in. Many of them also have a timer
you can set to go off after 4 hours, or if you like every four hours.

My doctor needs a list of times that I took the drug. (monitoring side
effects such as insomnia)
My phone has a countdown timer - I can set it to reset every 4 hours

Considering further, a suitable device could probably be built out
of a cheap PIC, a battery, and a pushbutton. In any volume it
could go for something in the twenty dollar area. It could be
unloaded via an RS232 port, or SPI, etc. Take your meds, push the
button. Once daily (or weekly, etc) unload it somewhere.
I am capable of tackling such, but not willing. Once again, try
comp.arch.embedded. There could be a buck in it for someone.
Needs a few interlocks, against multiple button pushes, for
example.

The project is in the planning stages, so they haven't actually released
any software yet. Also, it looks like this is for J2SE (Java 2 Standard
Edition), which means it probably won't run on cellphones (which only have
J2ME, Java 2 Micro Edition). J2SE is intended for desktop usage, and
requires something like a 100 meg download, which most phones can't afford.

I think the JDK is between 60 and 80 Mo (my phone can afford it), and he
only needs the JRE. It's about 7 Mo, I think.

When I right click on properties for my "C:\Program

- different classpath'sHi!
I have an applet that loaded another class from the same classpath:
Class clas = Class.forName("Classfile");
sub = (Applet)clas.newInstance();
Now I want to load a class file thats not in the same directory, the only
way I'm able to do this is by making a urlconnection to the class file,
retrieving all the bytes from this classfile using a getInputStream and then
define the class file using the defineClass method.
Is there another way to instantiate class files not in the same
directory/url than the instantiating applet? And how could this be done for
jar files?
Thanks in advance!

Most loans are expected to be repaid. Much of it came from before our
entry into the war. There was a MASSIVE isolationist block here at the
time and the politics made this the only form of help we could provide.
Britain was on the verge of collapse and nearly bankrupt. Can you say
that without that line of credit, Britain would have survived until our
entry with troops? In Business, that is usually termed a bail out.
The US costs of the war were 400,000 lives and almost $300 Billion during
the war. We did not expect to be repaid that by those we aided. In fact,
more money was poured into Europe afterwards to help rebuild.
I think JTK is wrong to keep bringing up something that was the right
thing to do as if he was lording it over the heads of everyone in Europe.
But your acting as if the US didn't provide crucial support at great cost
to itself seems cheap.
AS was that last little comment which seems to be saying we had a
responsability to defend Britain and the rest of Europe when they chose
not to be adequately prepared for war. We had not been attacked. What
reason would we have had except to premptively end Germany's possible
threat to us?

- Character encoding problem Using Java 1.4.2 and Mysql 5.0Hi All,
I am facing a problem for Character encoding that just made me crazy.
Our user's copies text from different sites and pasting it .
I m using jboss 3.2.3 and embedded tomcat 4.1.29 and MySql 5.0 as
backend.
I have used a filter that set character encoding like this
request.setCharacterEncoding("Cp1252");
and our jsp contains the tag :
<%@ page contentType="text/html; charset=windows-1252"
language="java"%>
<%@ page pageEncoding="windows-1252"%>
I am using jboss manage connection and mysql-ds.xml setting for mysql
is as follows:
jdbc:mysql://10.1.1.48:3306/mydb?useUnicode
=true&characterEncoding=cp1252&characterSetResults=cp1252
If debug the application just before insertion every thing is fine but
if iretrieve the content its weired and produce ? for some characters
like
"left angled double quote", "right angled double quote" etc..
Thanks in advance..

That's a good one, but it's funnier this way:
And the moral is...
We should all be using Visual Basic.

If I should hire a Struts programmer, and I'd have to choose between one
that knew Struts well from several projects, and one who had some
knowledge of a bunch of java webapp frameworks plus asp.net I'd simply
have to question them in depth. Maybe the Struts guy turned out to be
inexperienced, maybe he'd proove to be a struts expert ... who knows.
But if he turned out to be an experienced Struts programmer, well, the
choice would be obvious.

- easy compilation of a package tree?Hi,
i've created my own package and put the source tree under sources.
(i'm using windows)
Then i run a bat file with this content
dir sources /s /b /a -D *.java > srcfiles.txt
javac -d classes -cp
.;"..\lib\log4j-1.2.8.jar";"..\lib\dom4j-1.5-beta-2.jar" @srcfiles.txt
I then end up with a classes dir that i can use to make a jar.
Is there a better way of doing this? At home i also run linux so the dir
sollution
will not work. Is there another way of easily doing this?
Is suspect that i can also use ant to do this?
Thanks

- ComboBoxEditor problem in WindowsLookAndFeelHi everyone, I'm posting this for a colleague: He's custom coded a
class that implements a ComboBoxEditor. He's trying to get 2
JTextFields to reside in a JPanel, and the combo box display items
from both JTextFields. This works fine in MetalLookAndFeel, but in
WindowsLookAndFeel the second JTextField is "not seen"....the cursor
doesn't go there, you can't select anything in the field, etc. Also
an error is thrown. Below you'll find the error, then the code. Any
help is appreciated:

- Is there a better layout than GridBagLayout?
Hi,
Is there any better layout manager than GridBagLayout if you want
to be able to put stuff on your JFrame in a nice way.
I've tried XYLayout, but that doesn't expand my JScrollPane.
If I use BorderLayout I can't have two buttons beside each other
without creating a Box or JPanel for them.
So is GridBagLayout the best, or shall I use another?
Thanks.
