  - mysql and named pipesI'm using Win2000 and I want to use named pipes instead of a TCP/IP
    connection to MySql.
    
    I'm using the following connection string:
    
    jdbc:mysql://localhost/?enable-named-
    pipe&socket=MySQL&socketFactory=com.mysql.jdbc.NamedPipeSocketFactory
    
    And I get the following error:
    
    java.io.FileNotFoundException: \\.\pipe\MySQL (The system cannot find the
    file specified)
    
    Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

  - Property Editor Hi all,
    
    I am doing a library with some beans (Bean A and B for example). B has a
    "aProperty" that references an object of type A. I would like to do a
    property editor thar pemits, doing an object of type B to get in the
    aProperty a list of A existing objects. For example, y put in my form 2
    objects a1 y a2 of type A. if I create a b1 object of type B y would like to
    show a1 and a2 in the posibles values.
    I can do a static list using the getTags function of my property class,
    but don't know how to access to a1 and a2 variables.
    Any idea ?

  - JSF tld newbie QuestionHello all,
    I was looking at the JSF implementation source and some sample JSPs
    from sun. I was wondering how/where the tld files are referenced/found.
    
    For example the tld file html_basic.tld is jarred in the jsf-impl.jar.
    In a jsf page it is imported with <%@ taglib prefix="h"
    uri="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html" %>. Now there does not seem to be
    any reference to the uri mapping in the web.xml or faces-config.xml or
    anywhere else to the above uri.
    
    So how does the application know that uri="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html"
    references html_basic.tld?

  - a great dealIT'S SIMPLE AND IT'S LEGAL!!!!!!! I found this on a bulletin board
    and decided to try it a little while back; I was browsing through
    news groups just as you are right now and came across an article
    similar to this saying that you could make thousands of dollars

    trying to implement some kerberos authentification, and all works fine if
    authenticating local user, but when i try to authenticate
    remote user with servlet, through Internet Explorer i keep getting the NTLM
    token not the SPNEGO.
    I have done following things:
    
    1. put the requesting site in IE to local-network
    2. in the IE extended security option enable Integrated Windows
    Authentication
    
    then you should see a client response something like YIll....... which is
    true.
    (nope i get
    TlRMTVNTUAABAAAAB7IIogoACgAuAAAABgAGACgAAAAFASgKAAAAD0ZJTElQTUNSRURPQkFOS0E=
    which is NTLM)
    
    To configure Intranet Authentication:
    1. Click the Security tab, click Local intranet, and then click Custom
    Level.
    2. In the Security Settings dialog box, scroll down to the User
    Authentication section of the list.
    3. Select Automatic logon only in Intranet zone. This setting prevents users
    from having to re-enter logon credentials; a key piece to this solution.
    4. Click OK to close the Security Settings dialog box.
    
    In addition to the previous settings, one additional setting is required if
    you are running Internet Explorer 6.0.
    1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
    2. Click the Advanced tab.
    3. Scroll down to the Security section.
    4. Make sure that Enable Integrated Windows Authentication (requires
    restart) is checked, and then click OK.
    5. If this box was not checked, restart the browser.
    
    I do have JCIFS NTLM setup for entering the site, but afterwards i need to
    do authorisation with Kerberos to authenticate with EIM to work with jt400
    on as400.
    
    So when i do

  - Synchronized output stream sends data out of order, Possible?Hi All,
    
    I have a strange problem... I have > 1000 threads wanting to send data
    through synchronized DataOutputStream wrapped around a sockets
    OutputStream. Replies sent across the internet are received perfectly
    in the sent order but across the router the stream is somehow
    corrupted.
    
    Is there something I need to set to stop this problem?
    
    Please take a look a the code and corrupted output to see if I'm just

  - Tomcat and Connection pool size difficultiesI am experiencing something similar. I manage a website that is load
    balanced across two servers. They are both running Tomcat 5 and they
    both connect to the same database. On both servers we have maxActive
    set to 10 and maxIdle set to 2 in the Tomcat ResourceParams. For the
    most part, Tomcat DBCP plays by the rules and keeps the number of
    connections to our database below 10, but today for reasons unknown,
    both servers started using around 50 connections. Our database
    quickly ran out of connections and our website produced errors.
    
    I would have blown this off as a glitch, but both Tomcat servers
    exhibited this behavior independently of each other, which means that
    something triggered this behavior in a reproducable way. Anyone else
    having this problem? Anyone find a solution?

  - Strange problemDear All:
    
    I have used MySQL as prototype on an application that I am developing.
    The project has been
    approved and I am now moving to Oracle for the production run. I have a
    section
    that deals with user password. My front end is in JSP/Servlet using
    Apache tomcat and talking
    to Oracle 8i using JDBC driver from Oracle (but I am using the Oracle 9i
    driver).
    The user password, I am using MD5 hashes and storing the string copy of
    that hashes onto the database (as varchar).
    MySQL was ok. However, when I moved the application to talk to Oracle,
    I am always getting a different string back
    from the database than what I am saving into it. However, I am
    always getting back, from ORacle, the same
    set of characters. So it was consistently different but consistently in
    the same format. So I think there
    are some character conversion that is happening. Some of the
    characters are non-printable characters so
    they look like rubbish. But you can still compare with your bare eyes
    as the strings always contain the
    same set of characters.
    
    I think I am missing something as to how Oracle handle non-printable
    character strings.
    Any help much appreciated!!

  - Interrupt blocked database queryHello all,
    
    I know this has been discussed often, but I still can not find a good
    solution. I want to write an application where in one thread a database
    query is run against an oracle db. This query could run into a deadlock
    so I have to monitor this in another thread and react accordingly.
    
    I understand that the use of Thread.stop() is strongly discouraged and
    not working either. What is the best solution to this? Could I close the
    socket and see what is left from the database connection? Where do I get
    the socket then? Any other ideas?

    I've got an already existing data base (Postgres) which consists of a
    couple of tables and connections. There exist also some stored
    procedures. Now, how can I get java-classes generated of this
    information? Which tool can do this?

  - The new Net Beans IDE Java developer software. Good in theoryNowadays when you obtain the SDK form java.com
    you get a new interactive programming environemt
    much like the Borland C++ IDE.
    
    Up to now I've been developing applications "the old way"
    using the operating system command line method.
    that is, javac MyApp.java
    
    Then my computer at home crashed and I decided to install the
    JDK on my office computer. This was when I got the new
    Net Beans IDE. It all seemed good in theory, having eveything
    conveniently in one package, the editing, compiling and
    executing of your program. It even promised a way to assemble
    Jar files.
    
    The problem is that application programs which compiled just fine
    using the Command line compiler (javac MyApp.java) seemed to generate
    numerous "Cannot Resolve Symbol" errors on this new IDE thing.
    This is despite I had all necessary classes in the same directory.
    
    Another thing, I cannot make Jar files for my applets.
    I also han do problems with the command line method.
    
    I just don't understand. What's worse is that there are no readily
    available online resources to address such issues.
    
    Thank goodness I didn't have to pay for this thingy.
    
    What did these super-qualified programmers employed by Sun Microsystems
    lear in college?
    
    I finally got my home computer up and running again and
    I so happend to have an SDK (command line java compiler) from a CD I got
    with a Java textbook.
    
    I loaded it onto my computer and I am back in business again.

  - How do you do THAT with genericsI am working on an event mechanism. Part of my need is to be able to
    have a pool of events that can be reused, rather than incurring the cost
    of instantiating one via reflection every time I need one. The pool
    interface has this method for checking out an event:
    
    <E extends Object & Event> E checkout(Class<E> cl);
    
    Creating an event from this is easy; "return cl.newInstance();" works
    fine. The problem is in storing them for later use.
    
    Since there are many event classes in the event hierarchy, and since I
    want this method to be able to return an event of the exact type (so I
    don't have to cast it after getting it), I thought to use an inner class
    (PoolList<E extends Event>) that holds a list of just one type of Event
    and tracks which of its objects are in use and which are available. Then
    I could use a Map to key these PoolList objects by Class.
    
    That map is the problem. I need to have it store Class<E> as keys and
    PoolList<E> as values...the same parameter (E) in both. Except that the
    parameter isn't fixed...it could be any implementation of Event. So the
    closest thing that I have is...
    
    private Map<Class<? extends Event>, PoolList<? extends Event>> pool;
    
    ...which is wrong because it can't guarantee that the type parameters to
    Class and to PoolList are the same (only that they are both
    implementations of Event, but they could very well be different ones).
    Something like...
    
    private <T extends Event> Map<Class<T>, PoolList<T>> pool;
    
    ...would work, except that it isn't legal (the <T extends Event> part
    can't be used for fields, only for generic methods). It makes sense that
    there should be SOME way to do it...all of the necessary type
    information is there at compile time and nothing that's needed at
    runtime gets erased. But I can't come up with it.
    
    All I need is a Map that knows that if one type parameter is being used
    in the key, the same one should be used in the value. Is there a way in
    generics to do this?

    What exactly does this do in terms of how much memory is allocated to
    the JVM from the system?
    
    Does it initially allocate 32m to the JVM and allow it to grow to 200m
    over time? Or does it allocate 200m initially?

    I am looking for a simple way to play a sound clip (.au file) in a java
    application (not applet). AudioClip in java.applet seems to require URLs for
    clips, and the Java Sound API looks a little too elaborate for what I am
    trying to do. All I need is for this .au file to be played once inside
    another method. Can anyone give me some pointers here?

  - How to delete lines from input file?I'm writing this program to implement a two phase multi-way merge sort.
    It works by splitting the data to be sorted into temporary sorted
    lists (output files) equal in size to a memory constraint that is
    passed in when the program is run. What I've got to do now is actually
    merge the lists into one final output. The trick is that this is
    supposed to save disk I/Os. What happens is I read the smallest
    element from each temporary file into an array. From that array, the
    smallest goes into the final output, and that element is then replaced
    by the next element from the same list.
    
    I feel like what I need to do is delete a number from one of the
    temporary when it's read into the array. Then all I have to do is read
    the first line from the same list to get the next number into the
    merging array. Any suggestions on how to do this?
    
    I'm using SDK 1.4.2 and the input/output files are binary, so I'm using
    DataInput/OutputStream to do this.
